The CPI(M) is observing a local dawn-to-dusk hartal at Koyilandy and neighbouring areas in Kerala’s Kozhikode district on Friday, 23 February, protesting against the murder of its Koyilandi Town Central Local Secretary PV Sathyanathan, 66.

Sathyanathan was hacked during the festival of Cheriyapuram Temple at Peruvattoor around 10 pm on Thursday. Though he was rushed to the taluk hospital, his life could not be saved.

The CPI(M) leader’s wife, Lathika, and children Salilnath and Selina, were on the temple premises when he was attacked from behind during a musical event.

The accused, Abhilash, 33, of Peruvattoor, a former CPI(M) Branch Committee member and a driver on contract at the municipality, later surrendered to the police.

A case under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including section 302 has been registered.

Ruling out the involvement of any others in the crime, the police said a personal grudge seemed to be the motive for the murder.

Senior police officers are camping in the area to prevent any further untoward incidents.
