A case has been registered against a CPI(M) leader for allegedly carrying out an objectionable campaign against Congress Lok Sabha candidate and MLA Shafi Parambil on cyber platforms.

The case was registered against PK Ajeesh, a local committee member of the Marxist party, based on the complaint of a UDF worker, Perambra police said on Tuesday, 23 April.

The complaint

As per the complaint, the accused had made objectionable remarks on social media against Parambil, who is contesting in the Vadakara constituency, and against the Muslim community.

He was booked under significant sections of IPC.

Vadakara constituency has been witnessing an intense war of words between the ruling LDF and the opposition UDF over social media campaigns against its candidates.

CPI(M)’s KK Shailaja is seeking her electoral luck against Parambil in the April 26 LS polls.

Earlier, the CPI(M) alleged the UDF launched a vicious cyber attack against Shailaja, who was also the former health minister of the state, Congress moved the Kerala High Court seeking action to prevent bogus voting in Vadakara.

The CPI(M) filed a complaint with the Election Commission against Parambil, alleging that the cyber attack is being done with the candidate’s knowledge and that fake campaigns are being conducted by morphing photos and editing conversations.

IUML activist arrested

On 17 April, an activist of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) was booked for allegedly making fake and objectionable remarks through social media platforms against Shailaja.

The New Mahi police in Kannur registered a case on their own against Aslam, a local functionary of the IUML amidst widespread criticism against the intense cyber attack against Shailaja for some days.

IUML is a key member of the Congress-led UDF.

“We registered a case on our own against the accused the other day under Section 153 of the IPC and 120 (O) of the Kerala Police Act,” a police officer said.

While Section 153 of the Indian Penal Code refers to whoever deliberately or wantonly causes or provokes any riot through illegal means, 120 (O) of the KP Act refers to causing nuisance and violation of public order.

An investigation is going on, and further action will be taken soon, he added.
