CPI(M) state secretariat member and writer M Swaraj has announced that he will not accept the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Endowment Award, which was recently declared in the essay category.

In a Facebook post, Swaraj said he came to know about the award only after attending a party state committee meeting on the day of the announcement, on Thursday, 26 June.

He reiterated that he stands with his long-held position of not accepting any awards, whether for public service or literary contributions.

“Earlier, I had privately informed some trusts and committees about this stand when my name was considered for awards. Now that the news has become public, a statement was necessary,” Swaraj wrote.

Swaraj’s essay ‘Book of Flowers’ (Pookalude Pusthakam) was selected for the award.

In his post, he expressed his respect for the Kerala Sahitya Akademi but firmly declined the honour in keeping with his personal principle.
