Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on August 8 directed officials to make the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign a success by hoisting more than 1 crore flags across the state.

The Karnataka unit of the Congress has slammed the BJP-led state government for giving targets to government bodies to sell the national flag to make the Har Ghar Tiranga initiative and the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav event a success.

Congress leader and former Cabinet minister Priyank Kharge took a dig at the BJP when he said the state government was extorting money from the common man to celebrate the 75th Independence Day by selling the national flag.

“The Karnataka government has given targets to municipal corporations, panchayats, and tehsildars to sell the national flag. This is shameful,” Khrage told South First.

The former cabinet minister added that the government should have distributed the flags and not sold them.

Criticising the selling of national flags as “shameless”, the Congress leader tweeted, “State Govt made #KashmirFiles tax-free & BJP MLAs distributed cinema tickets for free, but are charging for faulty national flags. They are Desh Bhakts only during the elections. Their masters took over 52 years to hoist the #Tiranga in their offices. (sic)”

In another tweet, he said, “Since Govt has put up nationalism for sale. @INCKalaburagi has decided to distribute 10,000 National Flags free to educational, cultural institutions and people of Kalburagi. (sic)”

Yaswanthpura MLA and BJP  leader ST Somashekar termed the Congress’ allegations as baseless.

“The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign is receiving immense support from the people. The Congress should encourage it,” he said.

According to Kharge, government institutions and local bodies across rural and urban regions across the state had been directed to sell the national flag.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on 8 August directed officials to make the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign a success by hoisting more than 1 crore flags across the state.

A senior officer of the Karnataka Postal Circle told South First that till 8 August the department had sold around 3.5 lakh flags and they have a target of selling 7.5 lakh flags.

Similarly, a senior officer working with the Bengaluru Bruhat Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) said it had sold around 10 lakh flags till 13 August.

According to Bengaluru rural district Zilla Panchayat head K Revanappa, it had sold more than 1.05 lakh flags for ₹22 each.

He added that they had held awareness camps in gram panchayats and taluk panchayats to educate villagers to hoist the national flag at their houses on instructions of the government.

Similarly, national flags were sold in high numbers in the Davangere district.

Davangere district panchayat president A Chennappa told South First, “Around 2.5 lakh national flags have been sold. Each flag was sold for ₹20.”
