Synopsis: The ceiling of the assembly hall at Kodali Government UP School in the Thrissur district of Kerala collapsed. Fortunately, no students or staff were present as the district collector had declared a holiday for educational institutions in the district due to heavy rains.
A major accident was averted on the morning of Wednesday, 6 August, when the ceiling of the assembly hall at Kodali Government UP School in the Thrissur district of Kerala collapsed.
Fortunately, no students or staff were present as the district collector had declared a holiday for educational institutions in the district due to heavy rains.
The incident occurred in the early hours, causing extensive damage to ceiling fans and chairs. The ceiling, said to be made of gypsum board installed under a metal sheet, completely caved in.
The hall, which was inaugurated in 2023 after a renovation costing ₹54 lakh under the MLA’s local area development fund, was regularly used for daily assemblies.
Parents and locals allege that the building was constructed unscientifically and that several complaints had been raised earlier about its poor structural quality. They claim that water seepage was reported as recently as two months ago, but no corrective measures were taken.
It’s said that a PTA meeting held on 31 July had reportedly decided to carry out repair work soon. Congress workers staged a protest in front of the school, demanding action.
Local representatives, including ward members, also visited the site to assess the damage. The original construction of the building dates back over a decade, during which complaints of structural flaws were reportedly filed.
