Works progressing at Calicut international airport.

Calicut International Airport in Kerala, once crippled by the tragic 2020 plane crash and looming fears of a downgrade, is now scripting a powerful comeback.

With runway expansion and RESA (Runway End Safety Area) development progressing swiftly, the airport is poised to welcome large international and cargo aircraft, ushering in a new era for Malabar’s economy.

In a historic move, the government acquired 12.48 acres from 98 landowners in record time, compensating 76 families with ₹72.85 crore — the largest land acquisition package in Kerala.

The RESA development, being executed by Gawar Construction Ltd, is 22 percent complete, with 82 percent of the work targeted for completion by March 2026. Construction follows an eco-friendly model using geogrids and layered soil compaction, requiring over 35 lakh cubic meters of soil.

Land acquisition for leading lights and navigation systems is also underway, ensuring safer landings. Once complete, Karipur will accommodate wide-bodied jets like the Boeing 777, offering direct connectivity to destinations such as Dubai, Doha, and Jeddah.

This transformation will revitalise the Hajj embarkation centre, strengthen cargo exports — including perishables and handlooms — and create employment in logistics, hospitality, and small industries. It also promises better market access for farmers in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.

From being tagged a “risky runway,” Karipur is emerging as a gateway of opportunity. Its revival reflects the state’s aspirations towards inclusive development and regional prosperity.
