Severe depression in Bay of Bengal to intensify into Cyclone

A low-pressure area over the central-east Bay of Bengal intensified into a severe depression on Monday, with expectations of evolving into a cyclonic storm by Tuesday, 23 October. Meteorologists predict it will further strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by Thursday morning, 24 October.

The storm is projected to make landfall between Puri in Odisha and Sagar Island in West Bengal during the night of 24 October or early morning of 25 October. Wind speeds at landfall could reach up to 120 km/h, posing a significant threat to coastal regions.

In the meantime, Kerala can anticipate light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms throughout the week. The meteorological department has issued a heavy rainfall alert for isolated locations on  22 and 23 October, advising residents to exercise caution.

District authorities have been instructed to monitor low-lying areas for potential waterlogging and landslides, particularly in regions that have experienced intermittent rain over the past few days.

Fishermen are also urged to refrain from venturing into the sea due to the unpredictable weather conditions.

Heavy rains in other South states

Heavy rains have battered Karnataka, mainly affecting Shivamogga and Bengaluru. The relentless rain has wreaked havoc in parts of Bengaluru as well, particularly in Chikkabanavara, where hundreds of houses in Dwarka Nagar have remained flooded since last night. Water is overflowing from Banavara and Ganigerahalli Lakes, exacerbating the flooding crisis in the area.

Meanwhile, a thunderstorm warning is in effect for several districts in Tamil Nadu today, 22 October, 2024.

Moderate thunderstorms and lightning with moderate rainfall are expected over isolated places in Madurai, Dindigul, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Toothukudi districts.
