Synopsis: Alleging that devotees’ donations had been stolen, Priyanka Gandhi said those responsible for collecting the funds should also be held accountable for any subsequent irregularities. She called for a transparent probe and stringent legal action against those involved.
Congress MP from Wayanad Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday, 27 June, demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into the alleged irregularities involving donations made by devotees for the Ram Temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya, saying those who had appealed to the public for contributions must also answer for the incident.
Speaking to reporters in Wayanad, the Congress leader alleged “huge corruption” involving donations made for the temple and said the faith of millions of devotees had been betrayed.
“Political leaders who called upon people to donate for the Ram Temple should answer for what has happened. They also bear responsibility. Even very poor women contributed towards the temple. A proper investigation should be conducted,” Gandhi said.
Gandhi alleged that devotees’ donations had been stolen and claimed that those responsible for collecting the funds should also be held accountable for any subsequent irregularities.
She further alleged that the temple staff alone were unlikely to be behind the incident and that “big sharks” could be involved, calling for strict action against all those found guilty.
In a social media post, Gandhi said the alleged fraud had shaken the faith of crores of devotees who associated Lord Ram with truth and justice.
She said the alleged theft had raised serious questions about the emotional and religious trust reposed by devotees. Gandhi urged the temple trust to fulfil its responsibility towards those who had donated.
“Instead of a cover-up in the name of investigation, there should be a transparent probe, and whoever is involved in this act of theft must receive severe punishment,” she said on X.
Her remarks came after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged theft of donations reportedly seized ₹79.85 lakh from the accused in the case. Eight accused have been remanded in judicial custody as the investigation continues.
The allegations are currently under investigation.
