In Wayanad district, the health department has issued a high alert after two suspected cases of amoebic meningoencephalitis were reported.

Although not contagious, the disease has a high fatality rate. Medical officer Dr T Mohandas advised the public to seek immediate treatment if symptoms like fever appear.

Symptoms can appear within 1–9 days and include:

  • Severe headache, fever, vomiting, neck stiffness, sensitivity to light, seizures, and loss of consciousness.
  • Children may also show lethargy, poor appetite, and unresponsiveness.

The health department further noted that, early treatment significantly increases the chances of recovery.

Authorities further warned against swimming or washing in polluted ponds, lakes, or freshwater sources, especially where animals bathe or water is stagnant.

People with recent head injuries, ear infections, or nasal surgery should exercise extra caution.

Proper chlorination of swimming pools and water parks is essential.

A meeting of officials and representatives will be held on Tuesday after a case was confirmed in Bathery municipality.
