Mammootty

Malayalam actor Mammootty on Sunday, 1 September, took to Facebook to share his views on the Hema Committee report. Applauding the Kerala government for the initiative, Mammootty welcomed the committee’s recommendations and solutions.

Refuting the claims of a “power centre” in the Malayalam film industry, Mammootty said, “Cinema is not an arena where such things can exist.”

He urged the industry to join hands and fight unitedly. “It is time for all associations in the film industry to join hands and implement them,” he wrote.

Mohanlal on Saturday, speaking to the media, claimed that he is neither a part of any power group, nor is not aware of the power group mentioned in the Hema Committee report.

Mammootty emphasized the importance of responding to industry matters through official channels, stressing that opinions should be expressed only after receiving formal responses. He noted that cinema, as a reflection of society, mirrors both its virtues and vices, making any incidents within the industry a major topic of public discussion.

Speaking on the police investigation, Mammootty, said, “Police investigation is progressing. The full version of the Justice Hema Committee report is before the court. Let the police investigate honestly. Let the court decide the punishments.”

Mammootty urged for the practical recommendations from the Justice Hema Committee to be implemented and for necessary legislation to be enacted if legal challenges arise, emphasizing the need to preserve the integrity of the film industry.

Hema Committee report

The Hema Commission report on the issues faced by women in the Malayalam film industry was made public on 19 August, five years after it was submitted to the Kerala government.

The publication of the Justice K Hema Committee report on harassment and abuse in the Malayalam film industry has opened a can of worms with several female actors stepping forward with disturbing accounts of the mistreatment they faced at the hands of their various male counterparts.

The Kerala government constituted the Justice Hema Committee after the 2017 actress assault case and its report revealed instances of harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam cinema industry.
