Synopsis: Palakkad has lifted Nipah containment restrictions in six wards, days after Malappuram did the same. The move follows stabilization of the outbreak, with no new cases reported. Authorities urge continued caution, mask use, and hygiene. Two recent infections had triggered containment. Health officials credit public cooperation and continue surveillance to prevent further spread of the Nipah virus.
Days after Malappuram district withdrew containment restrictions in areas affected by the recent Nipah virus outbreak, neighbouring Palakkad has followed suit.
The district administration has lifted containment measures in six wards of two panchayats, signalling a significant step in the region’s efforts to control the outbreak.
According to an official order issued on Saturday, 12 July, containment restrictions have been withdrawn from Wards 7, 8, 9, and 11 of Thachanattukara Grama Panchayat in Mannarkkad taluk and Wards 17 and 18 of Karimpuzha Grama Panchayat in Ottapalam taluk.
On Thursday, 10 July, Malappuram district administration also had officially lifted all Nipah virus containment restrictions.
Earlier, several wards across Makkaparambu, Kootilangadi, Mankada, and Kuruva Grama Panchayats had been declared containment zones.
Authorities thanked the public for their cooperation and urged continued vigilance to prevent future outbreaks.
The move comes after health officials confirmed that the situation in these areas has stabilised, with no new Nipah cases reported and existing contact lists under control.
However, authorities have urged residents to remain cautious.
“Even though restrictions have been lifted, we must remain vigilant,” the order stated, adding that individuals currently under quarantine should continue isolation until further notice from health officials.
General precautions remain in place:
The containment zones were initially declared following the confirmation of Nipah virus infection in Thachanattukara Grama Panchayat in Mannarkkad taluk last month.
Two new infections were confirmed on 4 July: a 38-year-old woman in Palakkad and an 18-year-old woman in Malappuram who died on 1 July.
Intensive surveillance, contact tracing, and isolation protocols were enforced to prevent further spread.
With both Malappuram and Palakkad easing restrictions, health authorities are hopeful the outbreak has been effectively contained, though they continue to monitor the situation closely.
