In a significant development, Kerala Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) (Law and Order) Ajith Kumar IPS appeared before Director General of Police (DGP) Sheikh Darvesh Saheb IPS at the state police headquarters on Thursday, 12 September, to record his statement in connection with the allegations raised by Nilambur MLA PV Anvar.
The ADGP met the DGP at around 10 am on Thursday and recorded his statement.
The move comes after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan formed an inquiry team, led by the DGP to investigate the allegations levelled by the independent MLA supporting the LDF government in the state against the senior police officer.
In response to these accusations, ADGP Ajith Kumar requested a thorough investigation to clear the air surrounding the claims.
Sources within the police department revealed that although the State Police Chief had initially instructed Inspector General (IG) Sparjan Kumar IPS to record the ADGP’s statement, Ajith Kumar refused, expressing his preference to give his statement directly to the DGP.
This prompted the senior officer to formally inform the DGP of his decision through a letter.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggest that the DGP may have recommended a vigilance probe into Ajith Kumar’s assets, following complaints regarding disproportionate wealth.
However, no official confirmation has been provided on this matter.
The controversy began after Anvar made serious allegations against Ajith Kumar, leading to heightened public scrutiny and political attention.
The ongoing inquiry is expected to provide clarity on the matter and determine if further action will be taken.
Anvar had alleged that the ADGP was involved in the missing of Mohammad Attur, known as Mami, a real estate businessman from Kozhikode.
He had written to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan raising several serious allegations against Ajith Kumar.
Anvar asserted that he has evidence supporting his claims, which he plans to hand over to the Crime Branch investigation team.
He also linked the alleged gold smuggling connection of Ajith Kumar to the murder of Malappuram native Ridan Basil. He claimed that the police coerced and threatened the deceased’s wife to give a statement in line with what they wanted.
The MLA also urged the chief minister to investigate the ADGP’s involvement in disrupting the Thrissur Pooram this year.
