On Friday, 8 March, Industries Minister P Rajeev announced that the Director General of Prosecution of Kerala, TA Shaji, will examine the incident in which 11 crucial documents in the Abhimanyu murder case went missing from the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court.

It was on 2 July 2018, that 20-year-old Abhimanyu, a resident of Vattavada in Idukki and a second-year degree student of Maharajas College, got stabbed during a clash between activists of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Campus Front of India (CFI) — the student organisations of the CPI(M) and banned organisation PFI, respectively.

As per reports, as many as 11 documents, including the charge sheet, postmortem certificate, and wound certificate had gone missing last year. It was handed over to the court staff by the prosecution and it is suspected that it was misplaced.

When the matter was brought to the notice of the trial court, it informed the Kerala High Court.

In December 2023, the high court ordered the reconstruction of the missing documents.

‘Not to affect probe’

Talking to South First, the special public prosecutor in the Abhimanyu case, G Mohanraj said that the case of the missing documents will not affect the murder case as the prosecution has the original documents in its possession.

The case will be considered by the trial court on 18 March 2024.

There are 26 accused in the case, including 16 who were directly involved in the murder.

Recently, Abhimanyu’s family had demanded a probe into the missing documents. However, the SFI demanded that the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud directly investigate the murder.

Meanwhile, BJP State President K Surendran alleged that the CPI(M) is helping the murderers get away, and further hinted at an unholy nexus between the CPI(M) and the PFI.
