A 57 year-old tribal man was trampled to death by a wild elephant near Vaniyampuzha in Pothukallu, Nilambur, on Wednesday, 25 June night.
The victim, Billi, had gone to collect mushrooms from a forest area about 100 metres from his home. When he failed to return, locals found him dead with the elephant still nearby.
Rescue teams faced difficulty reaching the spot due to the swollen Chaliyar river and had to use boats to retrieve the body.
Efforts are on to shift the body to Nilambur District Hospital, weather permitting.
