Writer and Gokak Chaluvali fighter, PV Narayana, passes away

Narayana is known for being part of major kannada movements in the state, especially the Gokak Chaluvali in 1980s that went on make Kannada as the first language in educational institutions in the state.

PV Narayana

Synopsis: PV Narayana (82), a renowned writer, translator, and activist, passed away on 3 April in Bengaluru. Known for his research on Vachana Sahithya and his involvement in the Gokak Chaluvali, he authored over 45 works and contributed to Kannada’s classical language status in 2008. Narayana also taught Kannada for three decades, with notable works like Dharmakarana and Samajada Mele Vignyanda Prabhava.

Writer, translator, activist and former president of BM Shri Gaurava Prathishtana, PV Narayana (82), passed away in Bengaluru on 3 April due to health-related issues. He is survived by his wife and children. The last rites were performed at Banashankari Crematorium.

Born on 18 December, 1942 in Koratgere taluk in Tumakuru district, Narayana got his Masters degree in Kannada from Mysore University and a Masters degree in English from Karnatak University in Dharwad.

He is well known for his research work on Vachana Sahithya, his thesis is also titled as Ondu Vachana Sahithya: Samskrutika Adhyayana.

He worked as a Professor and taught Kannada for three decades in Vijaya College and retired. Narayana is known for being part of major kannada movements in the state, especially the Gokak Chaluvali in 1980s that went on make Kannada as the first language in educational institutions in the state.

He is also known for getting Kannada a classical tag in 2008.

Literary works

Narayana has authored more than 45 works in Kannada literature. His literary work Dharmakarana had created controversies in the literary circle. His research works include Balligave, Kayatattva, Champukavigalu, Vachana Chaluvali. He has also edited works such as Basava Purana Sangraha, Padmini Parinaya and others.

Narayana is popular for translating works like Hanneradane Ratri, Aswathaman Buviya Basirige Payana, etc. His novels include Antara, Vikas and more. He was awarded the State Sahithya Akademi Award for his work, Samajada Mele Vignyanda Prabhava (The Impact of Science on Society).

Expressing condolences, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah wrote on X: “I am saddened by the demise of senior writer and researcher Dr. P.V. Narayana. Narayana, who was at the forefront of literary cultivation as well as the struggle for Kannada, is an irreparable loss to the Saraswat world. I pray that the soul of the deceased may rest in peace. My condolences to Narayana’s family.”
