Bengaluru: Private videos, harassment, and a young woman’s tragic end
A harrowing incident unfolded in Bengaluru involving a young woman, Suhasi Singh, who ended her life after enduring harassment from her uncle, Praveen Singh.
Praveen Singh allegedly recorded private videos of Suhasi Singh on his mobile and pen drive. He later used these videos to blackmail her, threatening to send them to her parents if she did not comply with his demands.
He repeatedly pressured her to meet him at a hotel, booking rooms to coerce her into physical relationships.
Unable to bear the harassment, 24-year-old Suhasi, a software engineer, took the drastic step on 12 January, at Radha Hotel on ITPL Main Road.
She poured petrol on herself and set herself ablaze after being relentlessly threatened by Praveen.
Suhasi, who had been living with Praveen Singh and his wife in SVS Paradise Apartments in KR Puram, initially shared a close relationship with him.
Over time, their relationship turned intimate, which Praveen recorded without her knowledge. When Suhasi tried to distance herself and move on, Praveen became enraged after discovering her chats with another man.
On 12 January, Praveen booked a hotel room and insisted Suhasi meet him.
He showed her the private videos stored on a pen drive and threatened to send them to her parents if she refused his demands.
Distraught, Suhasi bought petrol from a nearby station and returned to the hotel room, where she set herself on fire.
Praveen reportedly tried to extinguish the fire by taking her to the bathroom and turning on the shower. However, by then, Suhasi had suffered severe burns.
Praveen also sustained burns to his hands during this attempt.
Suhasi was rushed to Victoria Hospital but succumbed to her injuries at 10 PM on the same day.
The HAL Police registered an FIR and arrested Praveen Singh on charges of abetment to suicide. He is currently in custody as investigations continue.
