Thirteen people die in two separate road accidents in Karnataka

Eight people lost their lives in an accident in Yellapura of Uttara Kannada district while four others in an accident near Sindhanur in Raichur.

Accident

At least nine people were killed and 15 others sustained injuries in an accident when the truck they were travelling fell into a 50-metre-deep valley near Yellapura in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka in the wee hours of Wednesday, 22 January.

In another incident, also in the early hours of Wednesday, four people, including three students and a driver, lost their lives in an accident in the Raichur district.

According to police sources, the accident also caused injuries to 10 others.

Yellapura accident

The victims of the Yellapura accident were all fruit vendors, who were heading towards the Yellapura fair from Savanur to sell fruits.

Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police (SP) M Narayana said they were travelling on the Savanur – Hubballi road when the accident occurred in a forested section.

“Around 5.30 am, the truck driver in a bid to give side to another vehicle went to the extreme left and fell into an about 50 metre deep Valley,” Narayana told PTI.

He added that there was no protection wall on the road in the valley.

“Eight persons were killed on the spot and two got critical injuries. The injured have been shifted to the KIMS Hospital in Hubballi,” the officer said.

Later, one more person lost their life. Police sources said many are in critical condition and added that the death toll is likely to rise.

The Yellapura police have visited the spot and are taking further action.

Sindhanur accident

According to sources, the first incident occurred near Sindhanur taluk of Raichur district. Police said the vehicle, with devotees returning from Narahari Aradhane at Hampi to Mantralayam, overturned.

Three students from the Mantralayam Sanskrit School, Ayavandan (18), Sujendra (22), and Abhilash (20), along with the driver Shiva (24), lost their lives in the accident.

Police said the accident occurred near Araginamara Camp in Sindhanur. Injured individuals have been admitted to the Sindhanur Taluk Hospital. The bodies of the deceased have been shifted to the mortuary of the hospital.

A case has been registered at the Sindhanur Traffic Police Station.
