The BJP’s Karnataka unit claimed on X that seven people were killed and blamed the state government for not ensuring adequate crowd management mechanism.
BJP President BY Vijayendra later said 11 people have been killed. He condemned the state government for the tragedy.
“Despite the traffic police telling the government that they couldn’t control the crowd in front of Vidhana Soudha for RCB victory celebrations, the state government ignored it and went ahead to host this event in front of the Vidhana Soudha,” he said.
“They (the government) are directly responsible for the deaths of the people and those who have injured seriously. There were no prior arrangements. There were no arrangements of ambulances or volunteers. Let there be a judicial enquiry on this serious issue. In total, 11 people have died so far,” he said, adding that the toll could go up.
The Rajat Patidar-led team rode directly to the Vidhana Soudha from the HAL Airport, even as a jubilant crowd lined the road. A victory parade planned earlier was dropped due to security reasons.
Thousands of fans had gathered outside the state legislature to catch a glimpse of the RCB team. The state government has organised a grand felicitation ceremony at the Vidhana Soudha for team for winning its maiden IPL title.
Authorities struggled to manage the crowd, leading to chaotic scenes outside the venue. Police sources said 5,000 personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order.
