Synopsis: Bengaluru CCB police arrested two people and identified 11 other suspects for allegedly issuing threats to actor Ramya on social media, after she commented on Supreme Court proceedings in the Renukaswamy murder case, in which actor Darshan is an accused.
The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the Bengaluru Police arrested two people for allegedly issuing rape and death threats to Kannada actor-producer and former Mandya MP Divya Spandana, popularly known by her screen name, Ramya.
Announcing the arrest in Bengaluru on Saturday, 2 August, City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh told the media that 11 other suspects have been identified. Three people, who used abusive language, were being interrogated.
“Based on Ramya’s complaint, the CCB has identified several people. We have received clear information about a few of them. Two people have been arrested.” He added that the police have information on 11 more individuals.
“The investigation is ongoing. We have verified the comments uploaded on social media. It is not yet known which celebrity fan group the arrested individuals belong to. We are looking into that as well,” the commissioner said.
He added that anyone posting defamatory or abusive messages would face legal action.
Ramya had on 28 July met the commissioner, complaining against 43 social media accounts for threatening her. She had then said that actor and murder accused Darshan Thoogudeepa’s fans were targeting her.
The suspects were identified through their social media accounts. Authorities traced their identities and addresses, and took them into custody on Friday, 1 August.
Following the arrests, Ramya thanked Home Minister G Parameshwara, police commissioner, and the entire CCB team for their swift response.
“I thank our Home Minister Dr Parameshwar avru @DrParameshwara and Seemant Kumar Singh avru @seemantsingh96 Commissioner of Police Bengaluru @CPBlr and the entire team at CCB for the swift action taken on the complaint,” she posted on X.
Appreciating the Bengaluru police, she added, “The Bangalore City Police have taken a firm stand against misogynistic aggression. Legal action has been initiated, and two individuals have been arrested. Authorities are actively pursuing further arrests to ensure justice is served.”
“The message is clear: It is difficult to escape the hand of law when it comes to protecting women’s dignity and ensuring safety in our city,” the actor further wrote.
Ramya allegedly faced a stream of abuse after she had posted a news report regarding the Renukaswamy murder case proceedings in the Supreme Court. In the post, she called for justice for the victim’s family.
Besides actor Darshan, 16 others were arrested in the murder case.
