Tensions escalate in Hanakere village over Dalit entry into temple
A dispute erupted in Hanakere village in the Mandya district of Karnataka over the entry of Dalits into the Sri Kalabhairaveshwara Swamy temple, followed by the members of the privileged class boycotting the temple in protest.
The conflict began when a group of Dalits, backed by government intervention, attempted to enter the temple on Sunday, 10 November, a place they had long been barred from.
The temple, which was rebuilt two years ago, was recently brought under the jurisdiction of the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department.
This change raised hopes among Dalit community members that the legal protections against caste-based discrimination in religious spaces would finally allow them to worship at the temple.
However, the village’s privileged class strongly opposed the idea, maintaining that Dalits should not be allowed to enter the temple. Efforts at mediation, including two peace meetings, failed to resolve the issue, and the tensions escalated.
On 10 November, despite strong opposition from the privileged class, a group of Dalits moved forward with plans to enter the temple under tight police security.
In retaliation, members of the privileged class staged protests near the temple, attempting to prevent the Dalits from entering.
In an act of defiance, some members of the privileged class entered the temple, removed the ceremonial idol, and brought it outside. They also tore down the temple’s name board, declaring, “Let them keep the temple; we will take the deity,” expressing their discontent over the perceived disruption of their customs.
Following the incident, the situation in Hanakere has become increasingly tense, with both sides firmly entrenched in their positions.
The district administration deployed additional police forces around the temple to maintain law and order and to prevent further escalation due to the highly sensitive dispute.
