Suhas Shetty murder: Prohibitory orders issued in Mangaluru from 2 to 6 May

As per the order released, it is prohibited for the public to congregate or roam in groups of five or more than five in the restricted area.

Synopsis: Following the murder of Suhas Shetty in Mangaluru on 1 May, police imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of BNSS from 2–6 May. Home Minister Parameshwara assured that the accused, regardless of affiliation, will not be spared. Security was intensified with 22 KSRP platoons and over 1,000 officers deployed. Authorities urged the public to maintain peace.

Following the murder of murder accused Suhas Shetty on Thursday, 1 May night, the Mangaluru police on Friday, 2 May, have issued a prohibitory order under section 163 of BNSS from 6 AM on 2 May to 6 AM on 6 May.

As per the order released, it is prohibited for the public to congregate or roam in groups of five or more than five in the restricted area. It is also prohibited to carry any weapons, causing physical violence and, exhibition of figures or effigies or persons. Any provocative speech against government institution and working officers is also totally prohibited.

However, this prohibition order shall not apply to any event, meeting or function conducted by or under the orders of the government in the area in force.

‘Accused will not be spared’: Home minister

Home Minister G Parameshwara said that the accused in the Suhas Shetty murder case, irrespective of party affiliations, will not be spared.

He said , “Four teams have already been formed to find the accused and a search has been conducted. The ADGP for Law and Order has already visited the spot. More police have been deployed. Necessary precautions have been taken to ensure that no untoward incident takes place.”

He said, “Mangaluru was regaining peace, but the incidents over the past few days, especially the one that occurred yesterday, have deeply disturbed Dakshina Kannada district. We will not allow this to continue under any circumstances. I urge the people of Dakshina Kannada to stay calm and uphold peace.”

Responding to the allegations of the BJP leaders about the soft spot of Congress towards killers and attackers on Hindu workers, he said, “As a responsible government, it is our responsibility to maintain peace, law and order. We have already taken all the necessary steps as per the law when such incidents occur.”

R Hithendra, Additional Director General of Police (law and order) speaking to the media about the murder of Suhas Shetty said, “We have got clues about the accused and we will take stringent action against them. At present 22 KSRP platoons, 1000 police officers and 5 SP rank officials have been deployed on bandobast duty.”

Suhas Shetty murder

Suhas Shetty, was hacked to death by a group of assailants near Kinnipadavu Cross in the Bajpe area on Thursday.

Anupam Agarwal, Mangaluru commissioner, speaking of the murder noted, “Rowdy sheeter Suhas Shetty was accused number 1 in the Fazil murder case which took place in 2022. He was intercepted by pick up vehicle and another Maruti Swift car. In order to save himself, he tried to escape and run. However, five to six people in Maruti Swift chased and attacked him with deadly weapons.”

He continued, “Though he was brought to the hospital, he couldn’t survive. A murder case has been filed in this regard and investigation is going on. It will be too early to tell about the motive behind the murder. We have identified the criminals involved in this murder. But until we arrest them and interrogate, it will be too early to say the motive.”

Referring to the increased police presence, the police officer said, “On Thursday, Bajrang Dal has called for a bandh in Mangaluru. Some miscreants have pelted stones on buses, however no one was injured. We have deployed our police in important place to see that untoward incidents do not take place. While there will be no funeral procession, we have made police bandobast in Bantwala where the last rites of Suhas Shetty will take place.”
