Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah

Synopsis: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah thanked the people of the State, Congress leaders and his Cabinet colleagues in a lengthy post on X hours after his resignation on Thursday. He said the Constitution and the teachings of leaders including BR Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi and Basavanna had guided his political life and his work for marginalised communities. Siddaramaiah also said his resignation would not mark the end of his public life and that he would continue to fight for social justice.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday evening, 28 May, thanked the people of the State, Congress leaders, party legislators and his Cabinet colleagues hours after tendering his resignation to Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot’s Special Secretary in the Governor’s absence earlier in the day.

In a post on X, the veteran Congress leader said his rise from a small village background to holding key political offices in Karnataka had been made possible by the Constitution.

“As someone who was born and brought up in a small village, I had never imagined that one day I would become an MLA, a Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and serve twice as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. A dream this big became possible only because of the Constitution written by Babasaheb Dr BR Ambedkar,” he wrote.

“I will forever remain grateful to the party legislators who trusted me and chose me to lead, to my cabinet colleagues who walked with me through every challenge, and to Smt Sonia Gandhi, Shri Rahul Gandhi, and AICC President Shri Mallikarjun Kharge for believing in me and giving me this responsibility.”

Guided by Ambedkar, Gandhi and Basavanna

Siddaramaiah said the teachings of Buddha, Basavanna, Dr BR Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi had guided him throughout his public life.

“Buddha, Basavanna, Babasaheb Ambedkar, and Mahatma Gandhi have always shown me the path,” he added.

He said his greatest satisfaction came from standing with marginalised communities during his 48 years in public life.

“Through my forty-eight years in public life, I have always tried to stand with honesty beside the poor, the oppressed, the neglected, and those who were denied opportunities in society. That is the greatest satisfaction of my life,” he said.

Siddaramaiah also expressed gratitude to Congress legislators, Cabinet colleagues and the party’s national leadership for supporting him during his tenure.

‘Not the end of public life’

Siddaramaiah thanked the people of Karnataka for their “love, trust, and companionship” throughout his political journey.

“I bow my head before the people of Karnataka, the lakhs of affectionate hearts who treated me as one among their own, blessed me, encouraged me, corrected me, stood by me in difficult times, and held my hand throughout this long journey. Whatever I am today is because of you,” he said.

He also said his resignation from the post of Chief Minister would not mark the end of his public life.

“The Constitution is my religion, and the people are my God. My resignation is only from the Chief Minister’s post, not from public life or from my commitment to the people,” he said.

“Till my last breath, I will continue to fight for social justice and stand against divisive communal forces that go against the spirit of our Constitution.”
