Shivakumar orders removal of encroachments blocking stormwater flow in Bengaluru

Synopsis: Deputy CM DK Shivakumar has ordered the removal of encroachments blocking rainwater flow in Bengaluru under the Disaster Management Act. After inspecting flood-hit areas near Manyata Tech Park, he stressed urgent action to prevent future urban flooding. Civic officials have been instructed to clear blocked stormwater drains and restore natural water channels across affected zones

In a significant move to tackle urban flooding in Bengaluru, Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru district in-charge minister DK Shivakumar announced that civic authorities have been directed to remove encroachments obstructing the natural flow of rainwater, invoking provisions of the Disaster Management Act.

Addressing the media after inspecting the Rajakaluve and stormwater drains near Manyata Tech Park in Yelahanka — one of the worst-affected areas during last week’s heavy rainfall — Shivakumar emphasised the urgency of clearing the pathways to prevent future floods.

“The Chief Minister and I have already visited the flood-hit zones. The flooding begins here and spreads to other parts. Some property owners have obtained court stay orders, and there was a lack of cooperation from officials. So, I’ve instructed the civic authorities to proceed with the removal of encroachments under the Disaster Management Act,” he said.

No intention of damaging private property

Clarifying that the government does not intend to unfairly damage private property, Shivakumar said, “We only want to ensure the free flow of water. I inspected the site myself, and property owners have agreed to cooperate.”

He added that compensation would be considered if land allocation errors by officials are found. The BBMP Commissioner and Secretary have been given full authority to act.

When asked about the BJP’s demand to reduce the garbage cess, Shivakumar said he would review the matter, noting that the cess was introduced during the BJP’s tenure.
