Karnataka police have arrested two workers of Cochin Shipyard’s Malpe unit in Udupi on charges of espionage for allegedly leaking confidential shipbuilding and naval equipment data to Pakistan.

The accused, identified as Rohit and Santri from Uttar Pradesh, were working on a contract basis through Sushma Marine Private Limited. According to the police, the two had been transmitting sensitive information for the past one and a half years.

Rohit had previously worked in Kerala, where he allegedly began sharing classified ship lists and other sensitive material through WhatsApp in exchange for money. After being posted to the Malpe shipyard, he and his accomplice reportedly continued to provide classified data for financial gain.

Cochin Shipyard, headquartered in Kerala, is a major shipbuilding organisation involved in constructing vessels for the Indian Navy. The arrests were made following a formal complaint lodged by the company’s CEO.

The two accused were taken into custody and produced before a court. Given the seriousness of the allegations, the National Investigation Agency is expected to join the probe.
