The incident

CCTV footage of the incident showed that the accused couple followed the two men on the motorcycle for nearly two kilometres before hitting them.

The arrested car driver is a Kalaripayattu (a martial art form of Kerala) trainer by profession. The incident took place on 25 October around 9 pm. The car driver drove his vehicle at high speed to knock down the people on the two-wheeler.

According to the Police, Darshan, a gig worker, and his friend were on a two-wheeler near Srirama Layout under Puttenahalli Police Station limits. Their bike collided with the car coming in the opposite direction and damaged the car’s rear-view mirror.

Enraged, the couple took a U-turn in their car to chase down the two-wheeler and deliberately collided with the two-wheeler.

It was Darshan’s sister who filed a case of hit and run with the JP Nagar traffic police, who collected CCTV footage from the accident site.

“To our horror, we discovered that it was not an accident but an Intentional act of dashing into Darshan’s scooter from behind. The driver suddenly veered to the left, dashed into the vehicle, and sped away, suggesting it was Intentional,” a senior traffic police officer said.

Locals took both of them to the hospital, where Darshan was declared brought dead.

CCTV footage also revealed that the couple returned to the accident site later and collected parts of the car that had come off while ramming the scooter.

Since the incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Puttenahalli Police Station, a murder case was registered there.

“The couple then drove back, and this time, their faces were clearly visible,” a senior police officer said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Lokesh Jagalasar said the couple confessed to the crime.

“This is most shocking and road rage has become an everyday affair in Bengaluru. People are filled with anger and the smallest provocation brings the beast out them. Most often it’s a poor kid who is a victim who has come all the way to Bengaluru to make a Living. What punishment should be given to these highly educated, successful, rich and well placed people who unleash such anger on poor souls…,” wrote former Bengaluru police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao on X.
