The Karnataka government on Monday, 11 August, withdrew the compulsory leave of senior IPS officer K Ramachandra Rao and posted him as the Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement.

Rao was serving as the Chairman and Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd when he was sent on compulsory leave on 15 March, days after his stepdaughter, actor Harshavardini Ranya aka Ranya Rao, was caught allegedly smuggling gold into the country.

Ranya was arrested at the Kempegowda International Airport for reportedly attempting to smuggle in 14.2 kilograms of gold worth ₹12.56 crore on 3 March. She had arrived at Terminal 2 aboard an Emirates flight from Dubai, where she had visited multiple times in 15 days.

In a notification issued on Monday, the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms said Rao’s leave had been withdrawn with immediate effect.

It was earlier alleged that Ranya, upon arriving at the airport, identified herself as the DGP’s daughter and requested local police escorts to her home.
