Ramalinga Reddy withdraws resignation and rejoins Karnataka Cabinet

Synopsis: Senior Karnataka Congress leader Ramalinga Reddy on Monday withdrew his resignation and took charge as Minister for Major and Medium Irrigation. He had resigned on 5 June after being denied the Greater Bengaluru Development portfolio, which was allotted to Krishna Byre Gowda. AICC Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala had earlier said the issue had been resolved after discussions.

Senior Karnataka Congress leader Ramalinga Reddy on Monday, 8 June, took charge as Minister for Major and Medium Irrigation after withdrawing his resignation from the cabinet.

He had resigned hours after Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced the portfolio allocations on 5 June, upset over being denied the Greater Bengaluru Development portfolio.

Reddy is scheduled to hold a meeting with officials of the Water Resources Department at 4 pm on Monday.

Earlier, on Saturday, AICC Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala said the issue had been resolved.

“Ramalinga Reddy ji is very important to the Congress party. His experience is invaluable to the party. We spoke to him; there had been some misunderstanding. He has withdrawn his resignation,” Surjewala told reporters.

The resignation

Reddy took oath as a minister on 4 June along with Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and 12 other MLAs. The following day, portfolios were allocated to all 13 ministers.

Soon after, Reddy tendered his resignation, expressing displeasure over not being allotted the Greater Bengaluru Development portfolio, which he reportedly had been promised. The portfolio was instead assigned to Krishna Byre Gowda.

He told reporters that he would continue as an MLA and a party worker but would not remain in the Cabinet.

One of the senior-most leaders in the Karnataka Congress, Reddy, 72, has represented the BTM Layout constituency in Bengaluru since 1989 and has never lost an election.

An eight-time MLA and six-time minister, he previously served as Transport Minister in the Siddaramaiah Cabinet.

Reddy is regarded as an influential Congress leader in Bengaluru and is considered important for the party ahead of the Greater Bengaluru Authority elections scheduled later this year.

His daughter, Soumya Reddy, is president of the Karnataka Mahila Congress.
