The demand to rename Dakshina Kannada district as Mangaluru is intensifying, with Deputy Commissioner H V Darshan confirming that a proposal will soon be submitted to the Karnataka government.

The move, backed during the DISHA meeting by MLA Harish Poonja and MP Brijesh Chowta, aims to align the district’s identity with the globally recognized “Mangaluru” brand. Cultural leaders and KPCC’s Rakshit Shivaram argue that the colonial-era name is outdated, and the district—located in Karnataka’s west—should reflect its current prominence. A memorandum will be submitted to top state leaders supporting the name change.
