National Investigation Agency (NIA) sleuths visited the house of KA Masood, one of the absconding accused in the case of BJP youth wing activist Praveen Nettaru’s murder, at the Nekkiladi village in Uppinangady in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka on Sunday, 16 July.
They pasted on the house a court notice asking him to surrender before 18 August.
The NIA officials also announced on Sunday the deadline for the public address system at Uppinangady in the Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada district that the house of Masood would be attached if he did not surrender to the court within the given deadline.
A similar announcement was made by the sleuths in Sullia on Saturday after the issuing of the new deadline for the surrender of the five accused in the case who are absconding.
The sleuths also put up the court notice at the bus stand in the Nekkiladi village.
Masood, the state leader of the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI), is arraigned as the fifth accused in the murder case.
Uppinangady police personnel assisted the NIA officials in pasting the notices at Masood’s house and the bus stand, police sources said.
The NIA earlier set 30 June as the deadline for the five accused to surrender or face confiscation of their property. The fresh deadline of 18 August was issued a few days ago.
During a raid on 28 June, the officials seized several electronic gadgets and documents during the searches at the houses of Abdul Nasir and Abdul Rahman in the Kodagu district and Naushad in Dakshina Kannada, who are also absconding.
Praveen Nettaru (32), a Zilla BJP Yuva Morcha committee member, was hacked to death by unidentified bike-borne assailants on the night of 26 July, 2022, in Bellare in the Dakshina Kannada district.
He was attacked while returning home from his poultry shop, according to the police. He attempted to flee after being attacked but fell after being struck on the head.
Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for Law and Order, Alok Kumar, who supervised the investigation, announced the arrest of Mohammed Shiyabuddin, Riyaz Angatadakar, and one Basheer the following day.
The Bellare police learnt that the father of one of the accused used to work for Nettaru at his chicken shop. As he knew Praveen well, he allegedly helped with the recce for identifying the target, Alok Kumar told reporters.
It was also learnt that after the murder, the accused took shelter at a mosque in Kerala’s Kasaragod district.
Nettaru’s murder triggered massive protests by right-wing organisations and their workers against the then BJP-ruled government in Karnataka, led by Basavaraj Bommai.
