A registrar of the Karnataka State Nursing Council (KSNC) was arrested after allegations of sexual harassment at the workplace. The KSNC is an autonomous statutory registration body in Bengaluru that regulates nursing education and practice within Karnataka.

The accused registrar, identified as Dr K Mallu, was arrested on 31 March following a complaint filed by a female colleague at the Upparpet Police Station in Bengaluru on 26 March.

The complainant said she works at the council’s office in Bengaluru, and alleged that a person serving as the registrar had been sexually harassing her, and she was unable to continue working.

Accused failed to respond to police notices

An FIR was registered at the Upparpet Police Station based on her complaint under sections 75(2) (sexual harassment), 78(2) (stalking), and 79 (acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Meanwhile, police officials said that Mallu allegedly exploited official interactions to behave inappropriately and make unwelcome advances and remarks towards the woman.

In her complaint, the woman said the sexual harassment she faced at the workplace made it untenable for her to continue working under such conditions.

Police sources said a notice was issued to the accused, but he failed to respond despite multiple reminders. “We took him into custody on 31 March and produced him before the court,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Bengaluru (West), Yathish N, said.

He was remanded to judicial custody on 1 April. Police officials said that further investigation is ongoing.
