PM Modi opens Boeing’s Tech Centre in Bengaluru, launches Sukanya Programme for women in aviation

The Boeing technology centre has come up on 43 acres, at an investment of ₹1,600 crore, near the Kempegowda International Airport.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, 19 January, inaugurated Boeing’s India Engineering and Technology Centre in Bengaluru and emphasised the city’s pivotal role in bridging India’s technological potential with global demand.

Modi highlighted the centre’s importance as Boeing’s largest facility outside the United States, asserting that it would not only strengthen India’s aviation sector but also contribute to global innovation and demand.

The event also saw the launch of the Boeing Sukanya Programme, aimed at increasing women’s participation in the aviation sector.

The prime minister underscored the government’s commitment to fostering women-led development and outlined the strides India has made in the aviation industry over the past decade.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah lauded the state’s position as a technology hub and expressed optimism that the facility would create opportunities for local professionals.

Connecting tech potential with global demand

“Bengaluru is a city which connects aspirations and innovations with achievements. Bengaluru also connects India’s tech potential with the global demand,” Modi asserted after inaugurating the centre.

Spread over 43 acres, the centre was developed at a cost of ₹1,600 crore, near the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru.  After the inauguration, the prime minister, accompanied by Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot and Siddaramaiah went around the centre.

“This facility will show India’s commitment to driving global tech, research, innovation and demand. The Make in India is Made for the World. This will strengthen our vision,” the prime minister said.

“This campus will bolster the world’s trust in India’s talent. One day, the aircraft for the future will be developed in this facility. Hence, I congratulate the Boeing management and stakeholders,” he said, while thanking the multinational corporation.

Modi said, “It is also a big day for the residents of Karnataka. Last year, Asia’s biggest helicopter manufacturing factory was completed here. Now, the global technology campus is also going to reach that (scale).”

“This shows how Karnataka is developing as an aviation hub,” he added.

Sky is the limit

Highlighting the participation of women in all sectors, Modi said, “We are making efforts to increase the women’s participation in all sectors.”

“You all might have witnessed one of our commitments made at the G-20. We told the world that it is time for women-led development,” he recalled.

“We are busy providing opportunities for women in the aviation or aerospace sector as well. Be it fighter pilot or civil aviation, women are leading it in India,” the prime minister further said.

“I can proudly say that 15 percent of the pilots in India are women. The importance of this will be known later because this is three times the global average,” he claimed.

On the Sukanya Programme, the prime minister said: “Today, the Boeing Sukanya Programme has been launched. With this, India’s daughters’ participation in the aviation sector will increase. This programme will help the daughters living in far areas and from poor families fulfil their dreams of becoming pilots.”

“A few months ago, everyone saw how India’s Chandrayaan has reached a place on the moon where no country was able to reach,” he said, referring to Chandrayaan’s landing on the lunar south pole.

“This success has taken the scientific temper to a new level among youths. India is also a hub in STEM education. Women study Science and Technology, Engineering and Maths,” Modi added.

Aviation market on an uptick

Highlighting India’s growth in the aviation market, Modi said, “You all have studied India’s aviation market and are also following its trajectory. In the past decade, India’s aviation market has completely transformed.”

“Every stakeholder in the aviation sector is pumped up with new energy. From manufacturing to services, every stakeholder is looking for new possibilities in India. India has become the third largest market in the domestic aviation sector,” the prime minister claimed.

“The domestic passenger traffic has doubled in the last decade. UDAAN like yojanas played a vital role in this. In the next few years, the domestic passenger traffic will witness further surge,” he said.

“Looking at the demand, our aircraft companies have ordered thousands of new flights. India is giving a new direction to the aviation sector,” he added.

Growth in air cargo sector

Asserting that the air cargo sector is also witnessing growth, Modi said, “With the increase in airport capacity, the air cargo sector is also developing. This is helping in taking Indian products to international markets.”

“The rapidly growing aviation sector is also providing pace for India’s overall development and employment generation as well. To develop the aviation sector, the government is taking several steps at the policy-making level,” he further said.

Modi further outlined the policies initiated to promote the aviation sector,

“In the next 25 years, the 140-crore people have resolved to make India a developed country. In the last nine years, we have removed 50 crore people from poverty. These crores of people are now developing as a neo-class,” he asserted.

“We will not have to wait for so long for Boeing’s fully designed and manufactured aircraft. I am confident that India’s aspirations and your expansions will turn out to be a strong partnership,” he added.

Propelling progress

Siddaramaiah termed the inauguration of the Boeing India Engineering and Technology Centre a testimony to the state’s continued dedication to fostering an ecosystem that propels progress in the global aviation sector.”

“It adds another feather to the illustrious cap of Karnataka. The state has consistently stood at the forefront of technology advancement in India,” he said.

“Karnataka proudly holds the title of fourth-largest technology cluster globally. It ranks first in India in innovation index and leading in total exports among all the states,” the chief minister added.

“I am particularly pleased that Boeing has chosen to establish this expansive facility near the international airport, an emerging hub for numerous future developments including aerospace and defence,” Siddaramaiah said,
