Belagavi road accident

Two girls were among six people killed after the mini-goods carrier they were travelling in crashed into a roadside tree at Chunchanur village near Ramdurg taluk in Karnataka’s Belagavi district around midnight on Wednesday, 4 December.

Seventeen others, aged 10 to 60, were injured in the accident.

The police said five people were killed instantly, while one died at the Gokak Taluka Hospital, where the injured are undergoing treatment.

The deceased and the injured were residents of the Hulakund village in Ramdurg. They were heading to participate in the annual car festival of the over five-century-old Yellamma Temple, five kilometres from Saundatti town in Belagavi.

The victims were identified as Hanumava Myagadi, 25, Maruti, 42, Indrava Fakirappa, 24, Deepa Harijan, 31, Savitha Mundas, 17, and Supritha Harijan, 11.

“Speeding and rash driving is one of the reasons for the accident. Around 23 pilgrims from different families were heading to Savadatti Yellamma Temple to take part in the annual Jatra Mahotsava,” Siddaramappa Unnad, sub-inspector of Katkol police station, told South First.

The police have booked driver Basavaraj Fakirappa, 40, for rash and negligent driving. Basavaraj, who also suffered injuries, has been admitted to the hospital. Officer Unnad said people complained that the driver was drunk.

“We are looking into it,” he added.

Ex gratia of ₹5 lakh

While offering condolences to the victims’ families, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced an ex gratia of ₹5 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to the next of kin of the deceased.

“I am deeply saddened to hear about the demise of six people in an accident in Belagavi. I pray to God to give strength to the victims’ families to bear this grief,” Bommai tweeted.

“The victims’ families will be given ₹5 lakh from the CM relief funds. I have also directed the officials concerned to provide proper medical aid to the injured,” he added.

Minister for Water Resources Govind Karjol, who is Belagavi district in-charge minister, also condoled the deaths.
