A person travelling via the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) on Monday, 12 August, complained of an unhygienic practice being followed at the airport.

Magniflex India Managing Director Anand Nichani, in a post on X, said that the same trays are used at the airport security check to carry personal belongings and muddy shoes.

However, the airport management said that separate trays are provided at the airport but people are not following that.

“During the security check at the airport, I noticed so much dirt on the trays where we keep our personal belongings. That’s when I realised that the same trays are being used to keep shoes also,” Nichani told South First.

He was also quick to add that the airport was in good shape other than this.

The issue of dirty trays

“The same trays that carry our muddy shoes are used for our personal items at airport security! This is NOT okay!
@BLRAirport, it’s time to make dedicated trays for shoes MANDATORY for a cleaner & more pleasant experience for everyone! Who’s with me? #HygieneMattersBIAL,” he wrote on X.

Responding to his post, BIAL responded, ” Hello @NichaniAnand, hygiene and passenger experience are top priorities for us, thus, we’ve positioned dedicated shoe trays adjacent to all of the X-rays for ease.”

However, he questioned why people were not following that.

“and yet people are using the same trays for shoes? I didn’t find any shoe tray stack near my security belt!! Why isn’t this mandatory?” he asked.

“I posted it on social media since if I got the attention, the authorities would take the necessary actions,” he said.

BIAL CEO responds

Meanwhile, BIAL CEO Hari Marar responded to Nichani’s post on LinkedIn and said he would ensure that the process was tightened so that it’s not repeated.

“Thank you Anand, for bringing this to my attention. There are separate trays provided for shoes at all the screening check points. This is a case of the defined process not being followed. Completely unacceptable! I will ensure that the process is tightened and measures put in place to ensure that this doesn’t happen again. Apologies for the inconvenience caused,” Marar wrote.

Nichani welcomed the response and hoped that this would be taken care of everywhere in India.

Social media users were quick to respond to Nichani, reverberating his views.

“Not only in Bangalore airport. Many airports across India, this is the same situation. Disgusting practice by airport officials..I always carry old newspapers in my bag and I used to cover the tray with a paper before placing my personal items,” wrote one user on X.

“We need cleaner and more hygienic travel experiences. Anand is right—dedicated trays for shoes at airport security should be standard.
@BLRAirport, time for a change! #WeStandWithYouAnand #HygieneMattersBIAL,” another user wrote.
