Synopsis: PM Narendra Modi accused Congress of being a “parasitic” party that betrays allies, citing its break with DMK and new alliance with TVK. Speaking in Bengaluru, he questioned Congress’ morality, attacked its leadership in Karnataka and Kerala, and dismissed its guarantees as false, while lauding BJP’s strength in Karnataka and recent NDA victories.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, 10 May, attacked the Congress, accusing it of becoming a ‘parasitic’ party, alleging that it ‘betrays’ its allies for political convenience.

His remarks come in the wake of the collapse of the Congress-DMK alliance in Tamil Nadu.

“Congress’ identity has now become one of a parasitic party. Due to this, in the first chance they get, they betray their allies,” he said.

Modi was in Bengaluru to attend the 45th anniversary celebrations of the Art of Living International Centre. Prior the celebrations, he also addressed a huge gathering of party workers where he lauded the recent victories of BJP and NDA allies in West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry.

As TVK president C Joseph Vijay and his new alliance partner Congress’ Rahul Gandhi shared a stage in Chennai, at the same time, Modi accused the grand old party of ‘backstabbing’ its long-time ally DMK.

Last week, Congress had formally ended its 19-year alliance with DMK and offered unconditional support to TVK to form the government in Tamil Nadu.

‘DMK rescued Congress’, says Modi

During his address, PM Modi claimed that Congress had survived politically for years because of DMK’s support.

“For 25–30 years, Congress shared a close relationship with DMK. The alliance with DMK rescued Congress from crises many times,” he said.

He further alleged that the UPA government at the Centre survived for 10 years because of DMK’s backing. The regional party stood by Congress “through thick and thin” for 25–30 years and worked for their benefit, he said.

“The moment political equations changed elsewhere, the power-hungry Congress stabbed DMK in the back at the very first opportunity,” he alleged.

Referring to the new alliance with TVK, PM alleged that the Congress was again seeking another party, whose “back it can ride on” to remain relevant in Tamil Nadu.

PM attacks Congress leadership in Karnataka, Kerala

PM Modi also berated the Congress leadership in Karnataka, accusing it of “betraying” people by focusing on internal differences over power-sharing arrangements.

“For the past three years in Karnataka, instead of resolving people’s problems, most of the government’s time here has been spent resolving internal conflicts. Congress government remained gripped by uncertainty over leadership and power-sharing arrangements,” he said.

He was referring to the continued speculation over a change in leadership in Karnataka.

“They cannot decide how long the CM will remain. They cannot decide whether another person will get a chance or not. Everything has been kept hanging,” he claimed.

Karnataka, he pointed out, had historically played a major role in strengthening the BJP. “I can see that a saffron sun has risen today from the land of Bengaluru. Even when BJP was not such a large party, Karnataka gave it tremendous strength,” he said.

He further termed Congress and its guarantees as false. “Congress only knows how to betray people. They are false themselves, and their guarantees are also false. There is no chapter on governance in Congress’ book of power,” he said.

He also took aim at the Congress leadership in Kerala for not yet taking a decision on the Chief Ministerial face.

“They cannot finalise a leader. They are unsure whether to have two CMs for two-and-a-half years each, or five CMs for one year each,” he said.
