Out on bail in one rape case, Karnataka BJP MLA Munirathna accused of gangrape by woman

Synopsis: A 40-year-old woman has accused BJP MLA Munirathna and his associates of gang rape, assault, and injecting her with a suspected deadly virus at his Mathikere office on 11 May. An FIR was filed on 22 May at Bengaluru’s RMC Yard police station under multiple IPC sections, including 376D, 270, 354, and 506. A detailed investigation is underway.

The Bengaluru police, on Thursday, 22 May, registered an FIR against BJP MLA Munirathna after a 40-year-old woman alleged that she was gang raped, urinated on face and injected with a deadly virus by him.

The MLA already has a rape case filed against him in 2024, in which he was arrested, and later released on bail.

According to the FIR registered at RMC Yard police station, the incident took place at Munirathna’s office in Mathikere on 11 June 2023.

The woman has named three of MLA’s associates who took her forcefully inside the office. However fourth name remains unknown.

In the FIR copy, woman further alleged that Munirathna and two of his associates forced her to strip despite her protest against it. She also said that they threatened to kill her son and family, if she didn’t co-operate, spoke about it, or filed a police complaint.

‘Injected with deadly virus’

The woman further alleged that Munirathna instructed two of his associates to rape her and they urinated on her face after that. She also alleged that Munirathna injected her with an unknown substance using a syringe.

The woman also suspects that the MLA injected her with a deadly virus, after she has allegedly been diagnosed with an “incurable disease”.

According to the police, the case has been filed under sections 376 D ( gang rape), section 270 (Malignant act likely to spread infection of dangerous disease to life), 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 504 (Intentional insult to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

Earlier case

In September 2024, Munirathna was arrested by Kaggalipura police on a complaint filed by 40 year old social worker accusing him of raping her on multiple occasions, blackmailing and threatening her with dire consequences..

A case of rape, honey trapping and sexual harassment was filed against Munirathna and six other accused at the Kaggalipura police station in Ramanagara district. The others were identified as Vijay Kumar, Sudhakara, Kiran Kumar, Lohit Gowda, Manjunath and Loki.

The First Information Report (FIR) was registered under Sections 354A, 354C, 376(2), 506, 504, 120(b), 149, 384, 406, 308 of Indian Penal Code along with 66 and 66(E) of the Information Technology Act 2000.

However, in October 2024, Munirathna was granted conditional bail by the Special court of sessions for criminal cases in rape case.

Apart from this, the BJP MLA also was charged with making caste-based derogatory remarks, issuing threats, and inciting enmity between communities.
