Heavy rains cause widespread flooding in Karnataka

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted that Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh may receive heavy rains and thunderstorms for three days from Monday, 21 October, under the influence of a cyclonic circulation formed over the central Andaman Sea.

Since 21 October, rains have been battering many parts of Karnataka, mainly affecting Shivamogga and Bengaluru.

Shivamogga has experienced severe flooding due to heavy rainfall. The rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, has affected low-lying regions, causing stormwater drains and channels to overflow into streets and homes.

Rain batters Bengaluru

Last night, Yelahanka faced heavy rainfall that resulted in significant flooding across various localities, disrupting the lives of residents and damaging property. The deluge caused water from Yelahanka Lake to overflow, inundating low-lying areas that should have drained into Jakkuru Lake.

Around 100 homes on Sir MV Road have been severely affected, leaving residents distressed and sleepless throughout the night. Vehicles, including bikes and cars, were submerged in the floodwaters, further complicating the situation.

The relentless rain has wreaked havoc in other parts of Bengaluru as well, particularly in Chikkabanavara, where hundreds of houses in Dwarka Nagar have remained flooded since last night. Water is overflowing from Banavara and Ganigerahalli Lakes, exacerbating the flooding crisis in the area.

Minister for Revenue, Krishna Byre Gowda, has been actively inspecting the rain-affected regions in Tatanagar. Following the heavy showers on Monday night, the Minister is coordinating with BBMP officials to pump out water from the affected homes and alleviate the suffering of residents.

In addition to property damage, the torrential rains have created hazardous road conditions. A physically challenged woman fell off her scooter while navigating a water-filled pothole on Halasahalli Road near Varthur on Tuesday morning. Passersby quickly came to her aid and voiced their frustrations over the poor state of local roads, highlighting the urgent need for infrastructure improvements.
