‘No to Umar Khalid and his words’, BJP wants Bengaluru police to cancel show
'Umar Khalid and His World: An Anthology' chronicles the alleged stifling of dissent and the contrived political circumstances meant to help the agenda of an autocratic state.
Synopsis: The BJP alleged that the planned event, Umar Khalid and His World, glorifies Khalid, an accused in the 2020 Delhi riots.
A BJP delegation led by Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan on Monday, 27 April, urged the city police commissioner to cancel a programme titled Umar Khalid and His World in support of Umar Khalid at the Bangalore International Centre, Domlur, on 28 April.
In a post on X, Mohan said he complained to the Commissioner against the proposed event, “involving the public glorification of Umar Khalid, an accused in the 2020 Delhi riots that led to over 50 deaths and who is charged under UAPA for terrorist activities.”
The event is being organised by All Lawyers Association for Justice (ALAJ), People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), and Bahutva Karnataka.
The BJP also alleged that pro-Umar Khalid graffiti has appeared in the city. Expressing concern, the party said it was a matter of public concern and urged authorities to act against it.
“Across the country, the Central Government has taken strict action against Naxalites. However, urban Naxal elements are still active and are indirectly supporting anti-national activities,” the BJP memorandum said.
The editors of the book Umar Khalid and His World, Anirban Bhattacharya, Banojyotsna Lahiri and Shuddhabrata Sengupta, will be reading excerpts from the book, followed by a panel discussion.
Earlier, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and the Hindu Rashtra Samanvaya Samiti, too, had urged the police to cancel the programme.
