Sexual assault case on Prajwal Revanna

BJP-led NDA’s candidate Hassan Prajwal Revanna — facing charges of sexually abusing several women — lost from Hassan seat in Lok Sabha elections 2024. As per ECI’s website, Prajwal Revanna lost with a margin of 42,649 votes.

The suspended JD(S) MP is currently in the custody of the SIT, which is probing the allegations of sexual abuse and rape against him.

Shreyas Patel of Congress wrested away the constituency, that is considered the bastion of JD(S).

Shreyas Patel is the grandson of Congress leader G Puttaswamy Gowda, who is the political rival of HD Deve Gowda.

G Puttaswamy Gowda defeated HD Deve Gowda in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.

The Hassan Lok Sabha Constituency has been a stronghold of the JD (S). It has been represented multiple times by the former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda.

In 2019, Deve Gowda passed down the seat to his grandson Prajwal Revanna, who won the seat with a margin of 1.4 lakh votes.

Shreyas Patel lost to Prajwal’s father HD Revanna in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections.

After the final round of counting, 33-year-old Revanna secured 6,30,339 votes, while Patel got 6,72,988 votes.

Among the three Lok Sabha seats contested by JD(S) in Karnataka, it won two seats—Kolar (M Mallesh Babu) and Mandya (HD Kumaraswamy).

Sexual assault case and arrest

The sexual assault charges against Prajwal came to light after Hassan went to the polls on 26 April. As the videos of the assault went viral, Prajwal fled the country on his diplomatic passport to Germany. Subsequently, he was suspended from JD (S).

On his return from Germany on 30 May, the SIT arrested Prajwal at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Produced before the 42nd Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court, he was subsequently sent to the SIT custody for seven days.

In a symbolic gesture meant to give confidence to victims of his alleged crimes, an all-women team of police personnel escorted Prajwal Revanna from the airport where he was detained.

They were led by two IPS officers, Suman D Pennekar and Seema Latkar. The incumbent Hassan MP was then taken in a jeep in which only women police were there. They took him to the CID office for interrogation.

While Prajwal is losing the election, it was noted by Supreme Court Advocate KV Dhananjay that the current legal framework allows Revanna to assume his parliamentary role as long as he remains not convicted.
