Synopsis: The FIR, filed based on Abdul Rahman’s friend Mohammed Nisar’s complaint, named 15 people as suspects in the murder case.
The Dakshina Kannada police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against 15 people in connection with the murder of Abdul Rahman, a mosque secretary, at Bantwal.
Police identified two of the suspects as Deepak and Sumit. The men allegedly attacked Rahman and his associate Kalandan Shafi with swords at Ira Kodi, Kurival village, on Tuesday, 27 May. Rahman was killed at the crime scene, while Shafi escaped with injuries. He has been admitted to the intensive care unit of the Highland Hospital.
The FIR, registered based on a complaint by Rahman’s friend Mohammed Nisar, said the complainant received a call from another friend, Mustafa, saying the duo was attacked by an armed gang .
“The complainant went to the house of Rajeevi at Irakodi in Kuriyal village in his Activa at around 3.45 pm. Rahman was lying on the ground in a pool of blood. He was not in a state to speak. Kalandar Shafi, who was there, was severely injured in the chest, back, hands and was sitting there next to him,” the FIR read.
The FIR further said that Rahman and Shafi were loading sand on a pick-up vehicle No. KA 19 AE 1477 from the stream and dropping it near the house of Ira Kodi Rajeevi of Kuriyal village.
“A group of about 15 people came there with swords, knives and rods. They pulled Abdul Rahman, who was sitting in the driver’s seat, out and stabbed him. When Shafi, who was nearby, intervened, he was stabbed in the chest, back, hands and arms. The assailants escaped when people raised an alarm,” the complaint said.
Shafi reportedly said that the assailants were known to them. acquaintances. Rahman was the secretary of the Jumma Masjid in Koltamajalu village.
Security has been tightened in the area to prevent any unrest.
Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister Dinesh Gundu Rao condemned the killing. “The murder of Abdul Rahman near Kolathamajalu is deeply disturbing. The motive is not yet known, but I have spoken to the Home Minister and senior police officials,” he said.
He alleged a larger plan to disrupt communal harmony in the district.
“There seems to be a systematic attempt to disturb peace in Dakshina Kannada. I have directed officials to take strong action and maintain law and order,” he added.
The minister urged the public to remain calm and not fall prey to rumours.
