The Karnataka Police suspended three officials over lapses in the alleged mob lynching case that took place in the Mangaluru Rural Police Station limits on 27 April.

The officials, Inspector Shivakumar KR, and constables Chandra P and Yallalinga, were suspended on the charges of dereliction of duty.

Ashraf, a mentally unstable person native to Wayanad in Kerala, was allegedly assaulted by a group of around 20 people during a cricket match on a ground near the Bhatra Kallurti Temple in Kudupu around 3 pm on 27 April.

Dereliction of duty

Mangaluru Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal told South First that the officers were unresponsive when they received a phone call regarding the mob lynching.

“When they received the call on the station directly, they were not responsive. They should have informed the higher officials and jumped into action. Three people have been suspended for failing to do their duty sincerely. Since they did not do their duty properly, the police registered the case as an unnatural death initially. Later, when the doctors suggested, a post-mortem was conducted,” Agarwal said.

According to the details provided by the Mangaluru police, a person named Deepak made a phone call to the police station to report about a mob beating up an unidentified man.

The officers at the police station asked him to call 112. It is said that they also misled top police officials despite knowing that it was a case of mob lynching.

The case

After the photo of the unidentified body was circulated, the family members of Ashraf came forward and took the mortal remains to their native place for burial. The man was said to be in an unstable mental condition.

The body of Ashraf was buried on Wednesday at the graveyard of Choalkkundu Juma Masjid in Malappuram.

Though the body bore no external injuries, doctors at Wenlock District Hospital, who performed the post-mortem examination on 28 April, informed the police in their preliminary report that internal bleeding and shock resulting from multiple strong blows to the back and other body parts, and a lack of timely medical treatment, had led to the man’s death.

Around 20 people have been arrested by the police so far. There are allegations that he was beaten up for raising pro-Pakistan slogans, but the police said no credible evidence was available.
