Synopsis: Karnataka Lokayukta police arrested Bengaluru police inspector Govindaraju for allegedly taking ₹4 lakh bribe from builder, who faced a cheating case. Govindaraju promised to remove Akbar’s name from the FIR for ₹5 lakh total. Caught red-handed with phenolphthalein-coated notes at CAR ground, he was arrested.
The Karnataka Lokayukta police on Thursday, 29 January, arrested a Bengaluru police inspector for allegedly accepting ₹4 lakh from a builder facing a cheating case.
The accused was identified as Govindaraju, who was posted at the KP Agrahara police station. He was reportedly caught red-handed at the City Armed Reserve (CAR) ground in Chamarajpet while collecting the bribe from the builder, Mohammed Akbar.
A day after a police inspector was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting a Rs 4 lakh bribe, a video showing him screaming and resisting arrest while being restrained by #Lokayukta officials surfaced on social media on Friday.
According to a Lokayukta officer, Akbar was involved in a cheating case, and Govindaraju had allegedly offered to secure his release on bail—or have his name removed from the case—in exchange for a bribe of ₹5 lakh. “Akbar and two others were booked in the case, and Govindaraju offered to drop his name from the cheating case,” the officer stated.
On 24 January, Akbar reportedly paid ₹1 lakh in cash and promised to settle the balance on Thursday. He then lodged a complaint with the Lokayukta police.
As per the police, Akbar arranged for Govindaraju to meet him at the CAR grounds to collect the remaining amount. Around 4.30 pm, Govindaraju arrived at the location in uniform and in his official vehicle. Akbar then handed over the alleged bribe money—the notes having been coated with phenolphthalein powder. Shortly afterwards, the police apprehended Govindaraju and placed him under arrest.
