Unable to bear his ‘alcoholic’ father’s harassment anymore, a 20-year-old Karnataka man killed the senior, cut the corpse into 30 pieces, and dumped them in a tube well, the Mudhol police said after arresting the son.

The deceased, police said, had been living with his family — wife and four children — at a farmhouse on the outskirts of Mudhol town in Karnataka’s Bagalkot district.

The father, Parashuram Kulali, 54, used to get drunk and harass his family regularly. On 6 December, too, he allegedly repeated it, and his son, Vittal Kulali, lost his patience, picked up an iron rod and bludgeoned his father to death.

After learning the man had died, Vittal chopped the body into 30 pieces with an axe and dumped the pieces in a tube well.

The incident came to light when villagers grew suspicious of the foul smell emanating from the well. They summoned the police and found the remains of the body.

The police said Vittal surrendered and confessed to the crime.

The motive

“Parashuram was addicted to alcohol. He used to consume alcohol and harass his wife and children every day. The father and son used to stay at a farmhouse on the outskirts of the town. On the day of the crime, Parashuram, under the influence of alcohol, abused and attacked his son,” the police said.

A fight ensued between the two. “Vittal killed his father to escape the constant torture,” the police said, quoting from the accused’s statement.

The police launched an operation to recover the body pieces from the well. After nearly six hours of the search operation, the cops managed to recover only half of the body parts.

The Mudhol police produced the accused before a local court, which remanded him in judicial custody for 15 days.

“The accused surrendered before the cops and also confessed to the crime. The motive was the victim, the accused man’s father, used to torture and beat his wife and children every day,” Superintendent of Police Jayaprakash told South First.

The police are investigating the possible involvement of other family members. “Efforts are on to find the remaining body parts. We are probing the incident from all possible angles,” Jayaprakash added.
