Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara said the state government will soon issue an order to implement the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for government employees, a key promise the Congress made ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections.
Parameshwara said the government has decided to move ahead with the scheme despite the financial implications. Details on the rollout, eligibility and the exact date of the government order are yet to be announced.
He was speaking at a function to mark Teachers’ Day in Thumakuru on Saturday, 5 September.
The deputy chief minister also said the government has initiated steps to recruit 15,000 teachers and fill vacancies in universities. He warned officials that action would be taken if public grievances raised under Praja Seva were not addressed.
On the drought situation, he said the government is supplying drinking water through tankers and hiring private borewells in affected areas. Karnataka has already declared 101 taluks drought-hit — 89 severely and 12 moderately affected.
