MGNREGA

Karnataka cabinet on Thursday, 7 May, decided to approach the Supreme Court to seek permission to continue implementation of MGNREGA in the state.

Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil said the state would immediately move the apex court seeking permission to prepare and implement the annual action plan for rural employment works.

He added that the state will also challenge what it described as an infringement on the constitutional rights of states.

“There are two points here. One is that they have come in the way of our constitutional right of providing the right to work. That has been halted, and, therefore, the state government has decided to approach the Supreme Court. The second point is that the Government of India has not provided any alternative,” Patil said.

He pointed out that the Centre had only permitted continuation of pending and spill over MGNREGA works without releasing grants or announcing a fresh action plan.

“We are already in May, and the Centre is yet to notify the new Act, frame rules and regulations. No alternative has been provided by the Centre. They have given advisory about water storage and availability due to climate change, and yet, the Act has not been notified. Hence, we will approach the court immediately,” Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister further added.

The Centre has replaced MGNREGA with Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Act, 2025 in December 2025.
