In a major step towards empowering women graduates, the Karnataka government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UK’s Chevening Scholarships programme.
The initiative will provide women from Karnataka with an opportunity to pursue a fully-funded Master’s degree in the United Kingdom.
The MoU was signed during the ongoing Winter Session of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in Belagavi, with Higher Education Minister Dr MC Sudhakar and British Deputy High Commissioner to Karnataka and Kerala Chandru Iyer in attendance.

Chevening is the UK government’s prestigious international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders, which has been operational since 1983. The Chevening India programme is the largest of its kind globally, offering up to 45 fully-funded scholarships and 45 fully-paid fellowships every year.
With a presence in over 160 countries, Chevening boasts a network of over 3,900 alumni across India.
Iyer expressed his delight at the partnership, stating, “I am thrilled that Chevening has partnered with Karnataka to empower women graduates. Supporting women and girls around the world, particularly in fields like technology and climate resilience, is a core part of the UK’s global agenda.”
The Chevening programme, which has fostered global collaboration, academic excellence, and leadership for over 40 years, aims to develop future leaders who will contribute to positive change in their societies.
Iyer also highlighted that Karnataka is the first state in South India to participate in this initiative, noting that many previous Chevening scholars, especially first-generation learners from smaller towns, have gone on to make significant contributions to India’s development.
Under the new initiative, five women graduates from Karnataka will be awarded the fully-funded Chevening Master’s scholarship each year for the next three years.
A total of 15 women will benefit from this programme, with the first batch set to begin their studies in the UK from September 2025. The scholarships are open to graduates from all academic disciplines.
