The Republican Party of India (RPI) has decided to drop its plan to celebrate Veerarani Onake Obavva Jayanti at the Eidgah Maidan in Hubbali, Karnataka.

The party dropped the plan to hold the celebrations at the Maidan “keeping in mind the religious sentiments of the Muslim community.” The BJP-ruled Hubbali-Dharwad’s Mahanagara Paiike (HDMP) had permitted to hold the event on Friday, 11 November.

Veerarani Onake Obavva is considered one of Karnataka’s foremost women warriors and patriots, along with Abbakka Rani, Keladi Chennamma and Kittur Chennamma. She had single-handedly fought Hyder Ali’s forces with a pestle in the 18th century.

On Thursday, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) organised Tipu Jayanti at the maidan, even as right-wing Rashtriya Hindu Sena chief and others raised anti-AIMIM slogans near the venue. The police on duty at the maidan took them into preventive custody.

Incidentally, a section of AIMIM members opposed holding the event at the Eidgah Maidan, saying it would diminish the sanctity of the place.

Conditional permission to AIMIM

“There were around 50 people, most of them from the AIMIM. It was brief lasting a little over half an hour”, Vijay Guntral told South First. “We dispersed by 11.30 am,” he added.

Earlier, the HDMP had permitted to hold the event with a rider that it should not exceed two hours and allotted the 10 am to 12-noon time slot. Guntral had sought permission on behalf of the AIMIM.

The civic body also allowed AIMIM to display Tipu Sultan’s portraits. It, however, barred the organisers from showing or making provocative images or statements. The organisers were also told to ensure adequate police security.

The HDMP has also approved a request to hold Bhakta Kanakadasa Jayanti at the Eidgah Maidan.

Janata Dal (Secular) leader CM Ibrahim, who had visited Hubballi a couple of days ago, said he did not believe in observing such jayantis as they celebrated individuals.

It may be noted that the High Court of Karnataka had earlier allowed Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at the Eidgah Maidan.
