Resident doctors protest for stipend hike in Karnataka
The Karnataka Medical Education Department, on Friday, 23 August passed an order hiking the stipend of senior resident doctors and postgraduate medical students by 25 percent. The strike launched by resident doctors on 12 August lasted for eleven days before their demands were met.
This move comes after medical education Minister Dr Sharan Prakash Patil intervened following a call for a strike by resident doctors. The minister discussed with the officials of his department and instructed them to pass an order hiking the stipend. The revised stipend will be applicable from 1 August.
Following the hike in stipend, the resident doctors and PG medical students alike have called off the strike. With the increase in stipend, first-year PG residents will earn ₹56,250, second-year residents will get ₹62,500, and third-year residents will earn ₹68,750.
Meanwhile, super speciality resident doctors and senior residents will receive stipends ranging from ₹68,750 to ₹81,250 and ₹75,000, respectively. Here are the details of the revised stipend.

For senior residents – ₹60000 to ₹75000
The order noted that currently, there are 3,540 postgraduate resident doctors and 445 and 527 super speciality and senior residents respectively. This brings the total number of PG and resident doctors to 4,312.
