The Ballari District Police on Monday, 13 June, arrested five people who allegedly abducted and brutally killed a man in the Devalapura area of Ballari city in Karnataka.

The police also recovered the vehicle used by the accused to commit the crime on 11 June.

The arrested have been identified as Vasanth Kumar alias Bharat (28), Venkata Swamy (23), Thippa Reddy alias Jeevan Reddy (22), Hassain alias Hussain Bolt (20), and Harish (19).

All of them are residents of the Toranagallu village in the Ballari district, the police said.

The victim, identified as Srinivas (45), belonged to the same neighbourhood as the accused.

Details of the murder

The accused dragged Srinivas out of his residence in the earliest hours of 11 June, claimed the cops.

They used a Tata Scorpio SUV to transport him to the Upparahalli village in the same district.

The police say the five people then used a sharp object to behead Shrinivas.

They then allegedly dragged his decapitated body to a 40-foot-deep empty gutter in a secluded area before fleeing.

They tried to use soil to hide the cover traces of blood leading to the body, said the police.

The five accused and the victim had a long history of internal disputes regarding money, said the police.

This could be the motive behind the gruesome murder, said the cops, but they did not disclose any other details.

Arrest

Srinivas’ son Vinod filed a complaint to the Kudathini Police Station against the accused after they abducted him from their residence.

The police apprehended all five accused and seized the vehicle used to commit the crime from the Chellagurki village two days after the incident.

The cops have booked the accused under Sections 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder), 302 (punishment for murder), and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence used in offence) of the Indian Penal Code.
