Synopsis: In Monday’s wrap of Karnataka news—An undertrial prisoner, Prakash Gopal Moolya, died by suicide in the Mangaluru sub-jail on Saturday. He was arrested on 11 March. Meanwhile, the forest department captured one of three trouble-causing elephants in Hassan district after a woman was killed in an attack on 14 March. Seven elephants were brought in to help with the capture operation.
In a shocking incident, an undertrial prisoner died by suicide at Mangaluru sub-jail in the wee hours on Saturday.
As per the details provided by police officials, the deceased is identified as Prakash Gopal Moolya (43), son of Gopal Moolya, resident of Moodbidri. He was arrested on 11 March by Moodbidri police officials and was in judicial custody under Section 65 of the BNS and Sections 4 & 6 of the POCSO Act.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased died by hanged himself between 4.05 am to 4.55 am using a towel tied to the window grill of a toilet. The incident was immediately noticed by the duty staff, and he was rushed to Government Wenlock Hospital, Mangaluru, in the jail’s official vehicle. However, doctors declared him brought dead.
A case has been registered at Barke Police Station under Section 194(4) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. Further legal proceedings are being carried out as per procedure.
After four hours of continuous hunting, the forest department successfully captured one of the three trouble-causing elephants in Hassan district on Sunday evening.
In an emergency meeting conducted on Saturday evening, Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre directed senior officials of the forest department to capture three trouble-causing elephants in Belur taluk of Hassan district.
The decision was taken after a woman was killed in an elephant attack on 14 March. Hence, the minister had directed officials to capture elephants roaming in parts of Arehalli and Bikkodu in Belur taluk.
In order to capture these trouble-causing elephants, the forest department brought seven elephants from the Mathigodu and Dubaare camps to the Bikkodu camp.
