Karnataka to bring 108 Ambulance services under State control, aims to enhance emergency healthcare

In a major healthcare reform move, the Karnataka government has approved a proposal to take direct control of the 108 ambulance services, ending the existing private contractor model. The services will now be managed by the state’s Health Department in a bid to enhance the quality of emergency response and ensure greater accountability.

The transition is projected to save the state an estimated ₹250 crore and improve the delivery of critical care services. A state-level Command Control Centre will be established to oversee the functioning of all 715 ambulances currently operating under the 108 emergency network.

In a step toward integrated emergency response, the government plans to adopt the 112 NG-ERSS software platform for efficient real-time coordination and monitoring. Additionally, each district will have its own 108 control centre, with District Health Officers tasked with managing day-to-day operations. Ambulance drivers and nursing staff will be recruited on a contractual basis at the district level.

The shift will be piloted in Chamarajanagar district before being rolled out to other regions across Karnataka. Furthermore, over 1,000 existing state-owned ambulances are expected to be brought under the unified command of the 108 network to streamline services across the board.
